Post entry for Jan. 20-24 2014

1. After reading the introduction chapter to Engaging Cinema, what are your initial thoughts as to studying the subject of film?
After reading the introduction, I became amazed by how films have changed over time. The text stated that some critics don't consider film art any more because of the increase in sex and violence in film. Growing up watching today's films witch often contain sex and violence, I don't find critics' response to today's movies true. I was also amazed how the creation and showing of movies has changed in a short time. Film has gone from being made on highly flammable, black and white film to completely computer animated and edited. Such great changes makes one wonder, what will the future of film bring us and how can/will it change.

2.Are movies a social danger or a social benefit?
In my opinion, films are more of a social benefit than a danger. Film is seen as more of a fun, recreational activity to do with family and friends. Some may believe film may influence one to do things that are not considered right. If there are such events where people say he or she caused danger or harm to society because of a film, I believe there must be other influences that caused a person to act in such way.

  1. Are you sure that it's more often a benefit? What about horror movies? They can't be good for little kids to watch when they are still developing, or some can cause night terrors. Although, I pretty much agreed with you when you mentioned something about how if it effects people; it's probably because they have some other issues.

P.S. Love the text color change, don't you? hahaha

  2. Are you saying that horror films can effect child development? With my current knowledge, I do not know any facts that state that horror movies can effect "little kids" that are "developing". I also don't find night tremors a social danger but rather a short term, personal "upset".

    1. Horror film in a sense I believe can effect kids or anyone who scares easily. Yes, i do agree it is sort term in most cases, but I think sometimes things can have an unconscious affect on people. Especially a person who is still developing in early child hood. Now I don't know if it's going to make them go crazy later in life, in fact i kind of doubt it, but sometimes you never know how things can effect people. Mainly when someone is so impressionable at such a young age.

  3. I agree with you, Cole. I believe that there must be other influences to cause people to act in certain ways. I also share your amazement on how the development of film has changed and how it will change in the future.
